The Truth About At-Home Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening in FresnoYou can’t turn on your television without seeing an advertisement for a teeth whitening product. From toothpastes to strips, advertisers make it seem as if you can make your teeth ten shades whiter in just minutes. If you think this sounds too good to be true, you’re right. Here’s the truth about over-the-counter teeth whitening products.

What are some at-home teeth-whitening methods?

  • Toothpastes. Whitening toothpastes use a mild abrasive to remove surface stains from the teeth. They may also use chemicals that help break down stains.
  • Gels. Whitening gels are applied directly to the teeth with a brush and must be left on the teeth for a specific period of time.
  • Strips. Teeth whitening strips are thin layers of plastic that contain the same peroxide-based formula as whitening gels. The strips are placed over the teeth for a specific time period each day.
  • Trays. This method also uses a peroxide-based whitening formula, but it is poured into a tray that is placed over the teeth.
  • Mouthwashes. Whitening mouthwashes perform all the same functions as a regular mouthwash but with an added ingredient, such as hydrogen peroxide, to whiten the teeth.

Do at-home teeth whitening products work?

These products work, but not as well as the advertising world would have you believe. Whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes can take weeks to produce any results, and even then your teeth may only be one shade lighter. Whitening gels, strips, and trays are more effective, but the best you can hope for is teeth that are four shades whiter.

What are my other options for teeth whitening?

If you want faster and better results, in-office teeth whitening is your best bet. Professional teeth whitening uses a stronger peroxide formula than over-the-counter products. Products and procedures may vary, but there are generally two methods. The whitening product can be applied to the teeth and left for a period of time, and one or more sessions may be needed to achieve the desired results. Another method is to apply the bleaching agent to the teeth and shine a special light on them, which speeds up the whitening process. Both methods produce excellent, professional grade results and can lighten your teeth by seven shades or more.
